Details

When our felines are in pain, it's not always easy to tell because, unlike humans, they cannot tell us and may even try their best to disguise it. Cats are also instinctively programmed to hide their pain and act like nothing is wrong. A house cat's wild ancestor had to be able to hide their pain, illness, or weakness in order to not appear vulnerable to other predators. This same reaction has been given down through the ages to our house cats and it prevents pet parents from really knowing if their cat is in discomfort.

It is up to us to be able to notice when our pets are in pain, and we need to look for subtle changes in their behavior.

  • Appearance: Your cat may be unable to groom himself or herself regularly and may become unkempt and untidy.
  • Behavioral changes: Your cat may become less active, reluctant to move, trembling, circling. He or she may become protective of a certain body part, not wanting to be held, touched or he/she may hide.
  • Physical abnormalities: Your cat may limp, be unable to put weight on a limb, appear hunched, or want to lay on his/her side more often.
  • Excessive Grooming: By licking constantly, your cat is trying to self-soothe. Instinctively, your cat will lick their wounds and they will do the same for internal pains.
  • Heavy or Altered Breathing: Panting heavily without exercising or shallow breathing are both warning signs.

Cats in pain have only a few options to find relief. Medicine from your veterinarian can be very expensive and potentially cause other physical issues. Long term usage can lead to risks that include gastrointestinal ulcers and kidney and liver toxicity. Other common side effects include vomiting, loss of appetite, low activity level, and diarrhea.

Why not try something more natural and gentler for your cats pain?
